Portland’s Utility Bike
With bicycles gaining an ever-greater position in Portland’s transportation planning, we’re starting to see more bicycles on the streets and more varieties of bikes than ever before –more than I can recall in my ten years living here. Fortunately, more people are discovering that their future may be brighter if they consider bicycles for their daily transportation needs. Enter the utility/cargo bicycle.
Xtracycle paved a new path for utility cycling with its introduction of the Hitchless Bicycle Trailers and Sport Utility Bicycle, but Portland really stepped up to the cargo carrying plate when Todd and Martina Fahrner and Dean and Rachel Mullin opened Clever Cycles. For those new to Portland’s utility cycling options, Clever Cycles is a fantastic shop specializing in Dutch bikes, specifically, the Dutch-built Bakfiet cargo bicycle. With the Bakfiet beginning to gain greater prominence on city streets, the idea of carrying your daily goods via bicycle has truly taken center stage. Enter the Yuba Mundo.
Part bicycle, part ‘truck’, the Mundo is the natural evolution of the cargo-oriented bicycle, featuring familiar bicycle geometry built around a unique three-platform steel utility frame. Ideal for carrying people and goods alike, the Mundo is the ultimate, scalable platform for meeting Portlanders’ daily transportation needs, sold at a cost that makes it accessible to a wide array of individuals and families. The path from discovering the Mundo to making the decision to sell them in Portland has been a very exciting journey for us at Stumptown Mundo –we’re happy to say that the Mundo has arrived.
